HPV vaccine- why are we not protecting our children?

A significant fall in the rate of uptake of the national programme of cervical cancer vaccination, is being blamed on unsubstantiated claims of certain side effects with the vaccine. Uptake was at 90% when the vaccine was introduced 6 years ago but now less than 50% of young girls are receiving the vaccine. This has significant implications for a very safe and effective vaccination programme. Cervical cancer is the 4th most common cancer  and the vaccine prevents in excess of 85% of these cancers. The vaccine also protects the person from external genital warts, which though not a life threatening condition still causes people great distress. In Australia where the vaccine has been in use for approximately 10 years the rate of cervical cancer and pre cancerous changes has dropped significantly.

I would urge all parents to encourage their daughters in 1st year in school to get this safe and effective vaccine.
